Five years ago, who would have thought that Twitter would become the powerful social tool that is today? It’s such a simple concept of disseminating small bits of information over large network of people and it seems pretty trivial, but it works. Today, 140 million tweets are sent on average every day, totaling over a billion tweets per week.

An official tweet was sent out by Twitter, stating that “five years ago this week, a small team of people started working on a prototype of the service we now know as Twitter.”

It also noted that “on March 21, 2006, Twitter CEO and founder Jack Dorsey sent the first Tweet.” That tweet was simple statement of less than 120 characters, simply stating “inviting coworkers.” They must have taken that invitation as Twitter is still growing at a rapid pace. It took three years, two months and one day for Twitter to reach a billion tweets.

Twitter has grown so large that it now has 400 employees worldwide to keep up with the rapid growth. In fact, more than 460,000 new accounts are created every day.

It’s amazing what the social media tool has accomplished in five years. It’s the easier way to update and get a simple message out to the masses, making it one of the best tools of social media and marketing out there today.
